PAOLO MALDINI

Born on June 26th 1968 in Milan, he's the son of Cesare Maldini [former Italy coach]. He is reputedly the world's BEST DEFENDER, and is one of the very few players to remain a one-man club, having played at Ac Milan throughout his career. He mainly plays left back but sometimes holds the centre back position as well.
In 1994 he was named World Soccer's World Player of the Year - putting him in the same class as famous names such as Platini, Zico and Paolo Rossi that infamous loafer.
In 2004, he was one of FIFA's top 100 and one of Pele's top 125 Greatest players.
His accolades are numerous and range from national team titles to the many honours he earned as club member and captain of the Rossonneris. At his club, he wears the #3 jersey.
My most emotional memory of Maldini as a player comes from the 1994 World Cup where, in the first round, they were pitted againt Norway and had to win the match else face an early exit. Maldini, already injured, since the team was a man down [Pagliuca being sent off for handling the ball outside the box], there was no thought of the captain being subbed. Maldini, through tears brought on by the pain of the hurt ankle, played the rest of the match and saw his team through to the next round......
